Preparing for a casting workshop: a working actor's method
A casting workshop is neither an audition nor a group class. It is a working session: a scene prepared with a partner, an on-camera take, then notes from a casting director. Here is how to get the most out of it.
1. Research the casting director
Their filmography, recent projects, the directors they work with. Not to please them: to understand their eye and the kind of screen acting they look for.
2. Up-to-date headshot and CV, uploaded on time
The casting director receives them before the session. A recent photo that looks like you today, a clear, current CV. The upload link is in your confirmation email.
3. Contact your scene partner as soon as you get the scene
You receive the scene 3 to 7 days before, with your partner's contact. Rehearse together, on video call or in person: blocking, stakes, rhythm. Arrive with the scene learnt, not set in stone.
4. Work the scene as if for a shoot
Lines learnt word for word. What your character wants, what stands in the way, what changes during the scene, the relationship. Make precise choices and prepare an alternative in case you are asked for something else.
5. On the day
Arrive early, warmed up. Simple clothes in line with the character, not a costume. Phone on silent, sides in your pocket.
6. Your take and taking direction
The core of the workshop is how you take a note. Hear it out, do not discuss it, do not apologise, play it. A clear change beats a nuance nobody sees.
7. Feedback
Write it down after your take. If you ask a question, keep it precise and about your acting.
8. After the workshop
You receive every take shot. Watch them with fresh eyes, spot what works, keep the best moments for your reel. A short thank-you is enough; no insistent follow-ups.
